SAINT MICHAEL
"Help and defend us on earth"
Saint Michael is described as one of the seven angels who stand before the
throne of God. Holy scripture describes Michael as "one of the chief
princes" (Dan. 10:13) and as the leader of the heavenly armies in their
battle against the forces of hell (Rev. 12:7). The archangel Michael is
known as the powerful agent of God who wards off evil from God's people,
and delivers peace to them at the end of this life's mortal struggle. He
is depicted as an archangel in full armor, with a sword and a pair of scales
with which he weighs the souls of those wishing to enter heaven and piercing
a dragon with his lance. Michael is the patron saint of countless churches,
including Mont-Saint-Michel and Coventry Cathedral in England. Emblems associated
with Saint Michael are full armor, spearing dagger, scales, and a sword.
