SAINT AGNES
”Put the powerful to shame”
As a child of twelve years, Agnes suffered for her faith in Rome, during
the cruel persecutions under the Emperor Diocletian. Agnes' riches and beauty
excited the young noblemen to contend as rivals for her hand. However, Agnes
answered them all that she had consecrated her virginity to a heavenly husband,
who could not be held by mortal eyes. The judge at first employed the mildest
expressions and most seductive promises, to which Agnes paid no regard.
He then made use of threats, but found her endowed with a masculine courage
and even eager to suffer torment and death. Seeing his measures ineffectual,
he sent her to a house of prostitution where many ran thither, full of wicked
desires. But they were seized with such awe at the sight of Agnes that they
did not approach her. At last the judge condemned her to be beheaded. Agnes
was filled with joy on hearing this sentence. As a special patroness of
chastity, she is one of the most popular of saints. In art, she is usually
represented with a lamb and sometimes with a dove with a ring in its beak.
Emblems associated with Saint Agnes are fire, a lamb and a palm.
