We believe Holy Scripture reveals God to the world and is the record of God’s saving acts from Creation to Jesus’ victory over death. Each book of the Bible is the inspired response of people to God’s steadfast love in a particular time and culture, and each calls for our response in our own time. We apply our Reason to the interpretation of the sacred books of the Bible and value sharing with one another insights into their meaning for us today. As long as we allow our reason to be guided by sincere prayer and regular study, we may trust that the Holy Spirit is present in the moral decisions we make as a result of our reading.
Tradition is important because it shows us what is “tried and true.” Guided by the Holy Spirit, tradition preserves the best and most useful practices of Christians for centuries so we may continue to use them in our worship, our study, and in serving others. The way we seek Christ in Scripture, the creeds which express our belief, the prayers we know so well, many of the hymns we sing, and the actions of our liturgy have all been handed down to us from generations of believers who were inspired by them to follow Christ. The traditions of the Church are a rich gift to us. |
