SAINT LUKE:
The ox is used to represent this evangelist because his Gospel deals with
the sacrificial aspects of Christ's life..
Donated by Mr. and Mrs. Robert T. Taylor in memory of Annie and John Almond
and Alzada Fullington.
SAINT JOHN:
As an evangelist John is symbolized by a rising eagle because in his Gospel
writings he deals with the spirituality of Christ..
SAINT PAUL:
Although not one of the original twelve, Paul was known as "apostle
to the Gentiles" for carrying the message of Christianity to the non-Jewish
world. Paul is represented by a sword, the instrument of his death, and
a book which represents his epistles. The words "spiritus gladius"
mean "sword of the spirit".
The shield and "sword of the "spirit" were both donated by
Mrs. Robert W. Rosenow, Mr. and Mrs. Ken Rosenow, Mr. and Mrs. Robert A.
Rosenow, Mr. and Mrs. Phil Turner, and Mr. and Mrs. Karl Helman in memory
of Robert W. Rosenow.
ALMOND:
The almond is a symbol of divine approval or favor (Numbers 17:1-8). The
almond shape or mandorla is also often used in depictions of the Virgin
Mary.
